TYPES OF CREATIVE WRITING

by DR VELMA MOHAN, 05 JUNE 2020

Creative writing is important as it teaches us to express our ideas, feelings and emotions. Poetry, tongue twisters, short stories, novels, plays, memoirs, songs, and speeches are some examples of creative writing.

Welcome to the world of creative writing…

*****

POEM

I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me, And what can be the use of him is more than I can see. He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head; And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

You have just listened to the poem, My Shadow written by Robert Louis Stevenson, recited by Ms. Neha. A poem is a piece of writing that uses imaginative words to share ideas, emotions or stories. A person who writes a poem is called a poet. There are different kinds of poems- narrative poems, shape poems, haikus, and limericks.

TONGUE TWISTERS

Children love tongue twisters. Creating tongue twisters and challenging friends to say them fast several times is fun.

Let us try another tongue twister:

Betty Botter bought some butter

But she said “The butter’s bitter;

If I put it in my batter

It will make my batter bitter;

But a bit of better butter

Will make my batter better;”

So it was better

Betty bought a bit of better butter.

Try it, it is fun…

SHORT STORIES

Who doesn’t like stories?

Short stories like “The Boy who cried wolf”, “The Happy Prince”, “The Gift of the Magi” and “A Christmas Carol” are enjoyed by both children and adults. Short stories not only entertain but also teach life lessons.

What is your favourite short story?

NOVELS

Willy Wonk in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, March sisters in Little Women, Harry Potter in Harry Potter series, Alice in Alice in Wonderland, Sarah in Little Princess, and Amar Kishen in Butterfinger series – grab the attention of the children as readers and take them along on grand adventures. Writing a book with such amazing characters and interesting plots require an immense amount of creative writing skills.

*****

PLAYS

An Annual Day Celebration is incomplete without a play performed by students. Costumes, props, actions, settings, and dialogues enlighten the audience. A successful play always has a well-written script.

*****

MEMOIR

Memoir is a book of memories.

In a memoir the writer is the main character. The writer shares his or her feelings, ideas and opinions to the readers.

*****

SPEECH

Public speaking is a very important skill. But many are afraid to speak. One main reason is lack of a good speech script. Speech is the act of speaking; expression or communication of thoughts and feelings by spoken words. A well-written speech and practice will drive away stage fright and encourage one to speak with confidence.

*****

SONG

Song is a piece of music with or without words. There are different kinds of songs such as folk songs, classical songs, and evergreen songs.

Creative Writing is Fun!!! Let’s Do It!!!

There is a literary genius in each one of us. We just need to tap into our creativity and let our imagination run wild.
