PLAGIARISM
When writing a research paper, sources such as books, article, and websites written by other people will be used to support the researcher’s argument. However, the borrowed material must be acknowledged to avoid plagiarism.
Plagiarism is a serious offence. It is illegal, immoral, and punishable. Student plagiarists may have to undergo punishments such as a failing grade or even being expelled from the institution.
The most blatant form of plagiarism is to submit as one’s own, a paper written by someone else. Another form of plagiarism is the failure to give appropriate acknowledgement when repeating or paraphrasing another’s wording, when taking a particular phrase, or when paraphrasing another’s line of thought.
In order to avoid plagiarism, indicate the name of the author (at the beginning of the sentence or in parenthesis at the end of the sentence) and the page reference in parenthesis at the end of the sentence.
It is not plagiarism to present other people’s ideas in your essay. But it is plagiarism to present other people’s work or ideas as your own. Hence, students, scholars, professors and editors must strictly follow the citation system in order to avoid committing plagiarism.
