How to create an animated video in PowerPoint?

June 19, 2020 by Dr. Velma Mohan

Storytelling is an excellent way to educate and to entertain students. There are different media to narrate a story- a book, a game, a movie, a comic, theatre, and animation.

Animation is an effective medium for telling stories. It appeals to people of all ages. Animated videos are great teaching tools also. Animated images, text, sound, and voice grab the attention of students.

There are many animation software apps such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, and 3D Movie Maker. Animated videos can also be created in PowerPoint easily.

How to create an animated video in PowerPoint?

STEP 1: Choose or write a script for the animated video.

STEP 2: After opening Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation, on the “Home” tab click “New Slide” and choose “Blank” slide layout.

STEP 3: Click the “Insert” tab and then click the “Online Pictures” command. Search the internet for a background image of your choice (animated jungle, animated park, or animated house). Select the desired image and then click “Insert”.

STEP 4: The image will appear on the selected slide. Resize the image (as shown in the video) to cover the slide.

STEP 5: Choose a GIF and PNG image from any search engine (google, bing, yahoo) and paste the selected image outside on the right side of the slide.

STEP 6: Click on the GIF and PNG image and click on “Animations” tab and select “line” animation. A copy of the image will appear below the original image. Drag the copy of the image across the slide and paste it outside on the left side of the slide.

STEP 7: Select “Animation Pane.” Click on the effect highlighted in the “Animation Pane” to change the settings of the “Start” option and the “Timing” option as desired.

STEP 8: To insert text, click “Insert” and choose “Text Box.” Click in the presentation and then drag to draw the “Text Box” of the required size. Enter the text (of your script) into the text box and select the font, size and colour as desired.

STEP 9: For special effects, click on the “Text Box” and select “Fly In” under “Animations” tab.

STEP 10: To insert audio, select “Insert” and click “Audio” to choose “Audio on my PC.” Choose the desired audio clip from your PC for the animated video and press insert.

STEP 11: To insert voice over, select “Insert” and click “Audio” to choose “Record Audio” and press the red button to record. Press the OK button to stop recording.

STEP 12: The process can be repeated for all slides till the story is completed. (Try to keep the animated video short with 5 slides.)

STEP 13: After all the slides are completed convert the ppt to a video. To convert the PowerPoint into a video, click “File” and select “Save a Copy/Save/Save As.” Choose the location, file name and video type (MPEG-4 Video). Click save button and Powerpoint will start converting the presentation into a video. The animated video is ready to watch and share.
